ENDORSEMENTS:
Dear people of Mendocino County,
With only a week left until the California legislature adjourns for this year, Senator Florez has again amended SB 1056 to extend the reach of this pending preemptive strike against local action on genetically engineered crops. As it now reads, the bill would preempt local decisions with respect to both seeds and nursery stock. The newly amended bill is attached.
If brought to a vote, the bill will most likely pass the Assembly, so the Senate is perhaps the only place the bill can be stopped. Senate president pro tem Don Perata will play a key role in the fate of the bill, so it's important to let him know we are watching and we expect him to do the right thing by insuring that local rights with respect to this critical issue are preserved. Should it come to a vote, we will also need to be sure Senator Chesbro will take a strong stand against the bill.
So we are asking you to take three actions in defense of Mendocino, Trinity and Marin Counties and the cities of Point Arena and Arcata, and in support of the Sonoma County initiative and the proposed ordinance in Lake County:
1. Contact Senator Perata by phone or fax at your earliest convenience on Tuesday, September 6 (Monday is the Labor Day holiday): (916) 651-4009, Fax (916) 327-1997. (email is okay, but telephone or fax contact has more impact - [email protected]) Tell Senator Perata that you support the right of local government to make decisions with regard to GE crops, and ask him to be sure this bill is not permitted to come to a vote.
2. Contact Senator Wes Chesbro at your earliest convenience on Tuesday: (916) 651-4002, Fax (916) 323-6958 ([email protected]). Tell Senator Chesbro that you support the right of local government to make decisions with regard to GE crops, and ask him to defend Measure H by voting against SB 1056.
3. Send this message to at least three supporters of GMO-Free Mendocino.
With thanks in advance for your continued support of our right to keep Mendocino County crops free of genetic contamination!

LATEST NEWS:
Welcome to the website for GMO-Free Mendocino and Measure H!
Mendocino County citizens are placing on the March 2004 ballot an initiative that, if enacted, would ban the growing of Genetically Modified Organisms to protect the Health, Welfare, Economy, and Private Property Rights of Mendocino County residents from the biggest uncontrolled biological experiment taking place in the world today. No one, not even the mega corporations pushing these "Franken Crops" can demonstrate their safety. Please join us in this historic process and Vote YES on MEASURE H!
Thank you,
Measure H Proponents, Els Cooperrider, Janie Sheppard, and Ron Epstein

What is Measure H and how will it protect us from GMO contamination?
Measure H simply bans the growing of GMO plants and animals in the County. Consumers can still buy GMO-containing foods at the supermarket. Measure H has no effect on biotechnology in medicine, or on the sale of such medicine in the County.
- Measure H will protect Mendocino County's farms and wineries and the "clean" reputation of our agricultural products.
- Measure H protects the County's fisheries and forests from contamination by GMO salmon or redwood trees.
- Measure H protects private property from GMO pollen contamination and safeguards home vegetable gardens.
- Measure H protects Mendocino County property values.
- Measure H will help protect you and your family from known, and unidentified health risks by providing you the option of buying locally grown foods, free of GMO contamination!
More on Measure H...

Why do we care about GMOs in Mendocino County?
- GMO contamination is permanent and irreversible.
- GMO pollen drift would contaminate Mendocino County's farms and backyard vegetable gardens.
- GMO contamination would make our wines and other farm products unmarketable to Europe and other world markets, jeopardizing the County's multimillion dollar export business.
- GMOs could affect our health. This is a huge uncontrolled biological experiment.

GMOs are a Health Risk
GMOs are so new and untested on humans that no one knows for sure how they affect our health.
Here are the concerns raised by scientists:
- GMOs may trigger allergies in people
- GMOs may create new toxins harmful to human health
- GMOs may lead to antibiotic resistance
- GMOs may be linked with a resurgence of infectious diseases
Just as the USDA has not enforced regulations that would have prevented Mad Cow disease, it can't protect us from the health risks of GMOs. Nor can it prevent the accidental release of untested GMOs into the environment.

Vote YES ON MEASURE H! Keep Mendocino County GMO-FREE!
- Protect your health!
- Protect our farms!
- Protect our economy!
- Protect our environment!
- Protect your private property!
